webcam compatibility for ubuntu simple please

I need a simple webcam. Have family moving to Germany soon. Something simple please. I'm a "newbie" to computer.
I tried a Microsoft Lifecam 2000, but it didn't work. I installed the cd, or tried to, but the computer just made a "whirring noise", so I took it out. Didn't seem to install. Thank you.
