Can maintainers of checkstyle project help with packages creation ?

Asked by RomanIvanov

Hi ,

I am administrator of Checkstyle project (http://checkstyle.sourceforge.net/)
I see that Ubutnu has checkstyle 5.9 - http://packages.ubuntu.com/source/vivid/checkstyle
For right now we have already 6.5 version released.

Most of your developers use Ubuntu for development. Can we some how help Ubuntu to have latest package in repository ?

On our side we have issue about that - https://github.com/checkstyle/checkstyle/issues/8 .

thanks,
Roman Ivanov

Packages in Ubuntu do not get updates just because a new version is released. It's not a rolling release distribution. If you report a bug and the bug and security fixes are significant then it may be updated sooner.

Ubuntu takes over most packages from Debian.

Debian also has only the 5.9 version, see http://packages.debian.org/src:checkstyle

I recommend you contact the Debian maintainer of the checkstyle package or create an adequate bug message in the Debian bug tracker. If the new version proves to work well in Debian, it will then be taken over into Ubuntu.

And another workaround that I did not mention in my previous message:

Updated versions of packages in some cases are provided in PPAs. I see that there is one with version 6.2 for trusty https://launchpad.net/~saiarcot895/+archive/ubuntu/myppa

A faster solution to provide the 6.5 version could be to create a PPA with such version for the various Ubuntu releases.

Can you help with this problem?
