/init: . : line 261: can't open /scripts/casper

Asked by David Partridge

I just ran through the procedure at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MakeALiveCD/DVD/BootableFlashFromHarddiskInstall to create a new live cd from my running system after upgrading my 16.04.4LTS system kernel to linux-generic-hwe-16.04-edge after being advised to do so by the btrfs team. The previous livecd I created used the 4.8.13 kernel and worked fine.

Unfortunately attempting to boot the DVD results in:

/init: . : line 261: can't open /scripts/casper
kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

Please can you help resolve this.

Thanks
David Partridge

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you burn the CD as slowly as possible?

I didn't download any ISO files - I used the procedure specified to BUILD an ISO file from my running system

No I burnt at my normal setting (MAX) and I never had any problems before now (so I don't honestly believe that it's a problem with the CD).

Further to previous message - it's a DVD not a CD and the burn was verified.
