Hi Thomas,
I made the experiment you proposed modifying grub.cfg file. In this case I use a regular Ubuntu (Main edition with Gnome) Impish iso file.
After Grub I get a blank screen with the cursor blinking and after only 32 seconds I reach Ubuntu logo and after 1 minute and 22 seconds the window where you select language settings and if you want to try Ubuntu first or begin installation process now without trying Ubuntu.
So it seems that you find the cause of the problem.
