Epub 10x larger than docx

Asked by Very Well Aged

Why is the epub (successful) conversion of a DOCX file ten times larger than the source?
The DOCX is 296,561
The PDF created from Word is 405,995
The epub is 3,280628
the AWZ3 is 3,307,459

This makes no sense.

The Calibre version is 7.12
Running on Debian Linux 12.5

Debian isn't supported here. This is the Ubuntu forum. Debian has its own forums here

@actionparsnip: Calibre is misusing Ubuntu's question tracker for all versions of calibre, not only when run on Ubuntu, see https://answers.launchpad.net/calibre

For the question:
epub files in fact are archive files. It might be interesting to look into the epub file to check which of the files in the archive are contributing to the total size in an amount more than expected.

Can you help with this problem?
