Calibre prioritized for all text files. Unnecessary and annoying

Asked by kaktux

Hi there,

everytime i install ubuntu - and some time later add calibre i stumble upon a behaviour of that package/program that makes no sense and is simply annoying.
Calibre is added as default program for almost all text related files. That includes odt files, txt files and most of those created by development environments. This doesnt make sense at all.

I get that maybe - with a big fat maybe - pdf, cbr/cbz may be used by some. It is ok to have epubs and similar associated.
But on which planet does someone want calibre as No1 or probably even any number to open files like an odt with calibre by default if you are a libreoffice etc. user?

I dont know how this is set - but as calibre is the only program that fucks up the order of default file-associations i decided to leave this question here - and ask for a change of that annoying behaviour if it is related to the package.
And changing back by hand whenever you discover another unneeded file association simply is annoying.
If not it would be nice to know what causes this.

regards

I suggest you report a bug. Are the steps to reproduce this:

1. Install and upgrade Ubuntu
2. Reboot
3. Install Calibre

Nothing more?

Which release of Ubuntu, which version of calibre are you talking of?

What is the output of the commands

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
apt-cache policy calibre
ls -l /usr/share/mime/packages/
grep '.odt' /usr/share/mime/packages/*.xml

i can say this for kubuntu 20.04 and 18.04 for sure. Not certain if this behaviour occured before.
It appeared on these two after installing (i did not upgrade - did a new installation).

On my system odt file are opening in Openoffice, text files are opening in gedit, and only files like epub are opening in calibre.
Calibre is shown as a program that is able to open odt and txt files, but it is not set as default.

What output do you receive for the commands

mimeopen -a -d -D whatever.odt

at the question
use application #
type the number that is shown in front of "LibreOffice Writer"

well - of course libreoffice in front there NOW - because i already had to change that (using kde settings for file associations) - and put libreoffice back to the top of the choices/default.
it currently gives me the options to choose from:
        1) LibreOffice Writer (libreoffice-writer)
        2) E-book Viewer (calibre-ebook-viewer)
        3) calibre (calibre-gui)
        4) Okular (okularApplication_ooo)
        5) Ark (org.kde.ark)

But still - why is calibre even in there.. - the installation puts it into the list to choose from somehow.

Let me give you another (of dozens) of examples:
- For x-python (.py)
- for x.lua (.lua)
- for font (.otf)

calibre is marked as program to choose for opening.

Which makes zero sense at all - and is the reason i opened this discussion.

What's wrong with having calibre in the list additionally, as long as it is not set to default?

Everything is wrong with that.
Would you be fine with every other programm to behave like that?
Even it is in no way related to opening the file format (see my font or python example up top - i am pretty sure the same goes for odt - next to 0 people will use calibre for odts).

And also: it IS set to default for odt and others - I wrote in my entry post that i have to change it back manually each time i installed it.

Let me ask you back -
What reason ist there to add calibre into the list for opening any other files then epub/mobi/pdf ?
What reason is there to add calibre into the list for opening odt/py/otf?
What reason is there to set calibre as default for most - including pdf/odt/py/otf - and many, many more?

I cant see any usercase that needs this - and that is why the title i choosed "Unnecessary and annoying" is true.

so you are confirming it is set. k.

As i myself can confirm the described behaviour for three different installations - time to open a bug.

thx.

You are welcome to create a bug report.

I just want to emphasize - I cannot confirm that calibre is set as default app to open text files or odt files etc.
On my system this is not the case and has never been.

Can you help with this problem?
