column width and other annoyances

Asked by Jochen

Dear Caja developers,

I am a frequent and joyful Caja user (in Mate 20.04), but I would like to let you know about some annoyances (Caja 1.24.0 in list view):

1) When opening in extra pane view a directory in one pane, Caja changes the width of that pane in an unpredictable way. Stop all automatic pane width adjustments or make it at least that it can be switched off!

2) After having opened a directory with a very long name and Caja is in "button location bar", the extra pane is also pushed aside and cannot be adjusted, even not when the long directory name in the button bar has returned to an ordinary short name. (That is actually a bug, but I mention it here). That happens often with saved internet pages.

3) The column width adjustment with the double arrow is difficult to handle. It would be a good idea to do it with the mouse wheel when the pointer is just over the column header.

4) Caja has a main tool bar, but it is only half full, that is wasted space in the vertical direction. And I am missing some important functions there:

extra pane, show hidden files, show backup files, properties

It should be easy to integrate that into the tool bar.

5) I have discovered as a new function in 1.24.0, mini thumbnails of the document files are hiding now the standard file format icons. I cannot see any use of it and it is blocking the "File's Emblem" function. It would be better to remove that function completely.

Thank you for listening
