installing build-essential

I want to use C++ on ubuntu. For this i needed build-essential package. It shown of 7 KB size. When i tried to install it it was showing message as Dependency is not satidfiable:g++(>=4:4.0)

My Ubuntu version is 10.10, i downloded it from ubuntu site. Please suggest me how to download and install build-essential package so that i can use C++ on ubuntu. Thanks

build-essential is a metapackage, it installs the packages required for compiling stuff, this is the same scenario with ubuntu-restricted-extras, both are metapackages and have no size.

Sounds like the packages are being upgraded and the metapackage is ahead of the available packages. I suggest you log a bug
