Writing full capacity data in DVD using Brasero

Asked by arpanb89

I am using Ubuntu 9.04 on my Desktop. While creating a data DVD using Brasero (version 2.26.1), I need to add around (4.6-4.7) GB of data in the disc. But Brasero tells me to insert a blank DVD-RM disc with 4.4 GB of free space (The disc burning window says "...The size of the project is too large for the disc even with the overburn option")!!!
In Windows XP and/or openSUSE11.1/Mandriva2009, I always write 4.7 GB of data in a DVD! How can I write above-mentioned capacity t DVD using Brasero?

About dvd size :

A 12cm dvd-r has a TOTAL (gross) capacity of 4,700,372,992 BYTES. That is to say

4,700,372,992 byte / 1024 = 4,590,208 KiB / 1024 = 4482.625 MiB /1024 = 4.37 GiB (Gigabyte)

So that makes equal 4,700,372,992 BYTES and 4.7 GB and 4.37 GiB,

Then depending on the size and total number of the files you have to subtract 1% to 5% for the FAT leaving you with an average 4.30 GiB of total space.

Some both widows and widows apps do this too ! They use the GB (=1000) when report total size and then use GiB as GB on other places.

Ubuntu reports the actual true size in GiB !

Also you have to consider "file size" and "file size on disk" that depends of sector size of the File System. (widow uses in some places GB (1000) and in others GiB (1024) in other places shows the total size of the sectors occupied ) ... It's hard to make size comparisons !

Not about burners

Brasero do not have a overburn function (that I know of !).

Try gnomebaker if you are using gnome

Or K3B for kde (although I got it to work inside gnome because i do not have ram considerations)

As a practical advice, in a data dvd the last 100-200mb are prone to be a source of problems because of physical media damage ((the outer side of the disk is sensible to finger contact, rotation deformation, etc).

There is a problem with this explanation. I am running Ubuntu 11.10 and the same Brassero reported 4.4GB (or GiB) for the free DVD space and 4.6 GB (or GiB) for the size of the project. I didn't know if it would fit or not. Finally I removed one file so that the "fill bar" on the Brassero GUI showed there was room. Then I added the file back again, and there was still room.

So I burned it and it worked. So Brassero itself should decide if it is talking apples or oranges and do so consistently. For the moment it is using both systems and is very confusing.
