DVD RAM Support ?

Asked by Julian Pitt

I have a DVD RAM disc that I need to erase but Brasero does not seem to support this format, is this correct. Is there any way of adding this additional functionality please. When I try to erase the disc the progress dialogue shows a DVD RAM disc but the blank button is greyed out. Whether fast blanking or not both options are not available.

There is a program. It supports nearly any round disk the size of CD/DVD.

Nero 3 for Linux. It´s not open source software. You can try it for 15 days. Then you have to buy it. But in those 15 days you have full functionality.

Give it a try.

Thanks for the advice but 15 days full functionality is not what I was after, surely there must be an open source solution available?

Thanks a lot actionparsnip, I will give the suggestions a go. It is not ideal, I think you might agree, to have to use the command line each time, just to perform a format. Should not DVD RAM be added as a supported format in the likes of K3B and Brasero? It is this perceived lack of support that surely will turn people away from adopting Linux as their OS of choice?

I doubt it as I have only heard of you and one other person using DVD-RAM. You could submit and bug and/or functionality request for Ubuntu and it may get added in a later release.

You can put command line commands into a script then have a .desktop file execute that script. You can then add this to your menu's / desktop / whatever for convenience.

Have you tried other CD/DVD Burning software: K3b (KDE), gnomebaker, brasero, serpentine, graveman, Nautilus-CD-Burner, GToaster, xcdroast (GNOME), wodim (terminal-based)

This may well be a hardware issue. Many DVD burners for computers DO NOT support DVD-RAM, but yours just very well may (I have none for example) Just a thought.

My burner very definitely does support DVD-RAM, and works fine under Windows. If Linux is to be more readily adopted it has to at least equal what Windows has to offer, surely?

Not necessarily. Its used by people to whom Linux suits their needs. We don't use Linux "just because we can" we use it because we like it but also because the OS matches our requirements.

Windows has its empire by force and comes pre-installed on systems galore. But Wndows may not suit the needs of a user and Mac OS may perform better for them for what the system is to be used for

Ipersonally only chat, browse and convert video from my camcorder to various formats. I can do all this in Linux without shelling out for the OS as well as all the tools I use. So why should I when Linux is exactly the tool I need

I think you need to evaluate why you use certain OSs. Linux isn't in competition with Microsoft as it has a GPL license and is free. If users want to use Linux they can. Maybe DVDRAM support will make more users use it, maybe not but its not a case of trying to get more users as this doesnt benefit anyone except a few developer egos

Can you help with this problem?
