Making DVDs

Asked by Icey1174

I am new to Linux. Is there an easy way to convert AVI files and burn them on a DVD to watch them in your regular DVD Player? I found a program called "tovid" which looks easy till I have to try to find and download all the dependencies. I guess it would be way too easy to just download one package that has everything in it! Is there any one FREE package that I can download somewhere that I can do this with???

Thanks for your help!

Usually all packages in linux are free, not always but almost always. Personnally i would go up to the top taskbar and click on

Applications - Sound&Video - Brasero

that usually makes mot types of cds and dvds for me

good luck and regards from
Tom

PS when looking for linux programs try going up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager

it asks for your normal user password, not your SuperUser/Root one. The search button looks through package descriptions as well as through titles so sometimes you can be quite vague.

I have used that program to burn DVDs and it works well. What I need to do is convert an AVI file to a file that I can burn onto a DVD and actually be able to watch it on my DVD Player in my living room.

Have you tried playing a dvd with an avi on it on the living room player? Sometimes they can actually read avi & mkv formats.

There was a very similar question a few weeks ago but i can't remember what the answers were. If you could search around the Answers forum here you'll probably find it faster than me as i keep getting distracted.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

I have been looking, and no, my DVD player will not play AVI. That would be WAY too easy! lol

I thought Brasero allowed us to make a video project through the "Project" menu where the "File" menu is in most other applications? Sorry i'm being a bit rubbish here

Will that feature allow me to burn them to play in a DVD Player?

Hmmm, i'm trying to use it now but it's not letting me burn the dvd. I'm going to try again with a cd this evening i think - gota get to the shops first though. It should make dvd's that can be played back and it certainly looks that way - the layout looks right but it's just not working for me right now :(

I can play the DVDs on the computer, just not on a stand alone DVD Player.

lol, yes getting something that can play back on the computer is easy. The layout of the Video Project looks like its designed to make things that can play back on a standalone dvd player. After clicking the "Burn" button in Brasero it suddenly asks all the crucial questions although the defaults looked about right to me. Sadly it then wouldn't let me click on "Ok" and i'm not sure why. it might be that my dvd disc is a bit old and scratched.

Which section are you using? "DataProject - Create a CD/DVD" or "Burn Image - Burn an existing CD/DVE image to disk"

i was using VideoProject and burning straight to a dvd - perhaps it would work better if i burned it as an image file first?

Where do you get Video Project from? I do not have that program.

No i meant within Brasero, instead of doing a DataProject i was trying to make a VideoProject - there is also an option to create an AudioProject or do a "disk copy" or "burn an image"

Hi :)

Have you been able to test the new Ubuntu 10.04 before it gets officially released?
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/testing/lucid/beta1
Trying it as a LiveCd or as an extra dual/multi-boot would be ideal. Developers and everyone are keen to try to iron out any problems before 10.04 gets officially released so you might find faster & more effective answers to your bug reports which would make 10.04 work better on your system for you

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)

Hi :)
Brasero is good now. Go up to the top-taskbar and click on

Applications - "Sound & Video" - Brasero

To install software it is usually best to use a package manager such as the "Software Centre" or Synaptic. They have search tools that hunt through descriptions of software that you can easily install to your system so you don't need to know an exact name. Once you find a few things to try install them. If you can't see an install button then try right-click to see it in the menu there.

Marco is right that it is better to post a new question & start a new thread. See near the top-right of the Launchpad page?

Tom :)

Hi :)
The advantage of posting a new question is that quite a lot of people see it and one of them is likely to have a good answer. Only about 2 or 3 of us see these older questions and i don't know a good answer
