Converting .mkv files to dvd to play in stand alone dvd players

Asked by jimmyed007

Hello I have a question about Ubuntu 8.04(Hardy Heron). I am trying to convert .mkv files to be able to play them in my dvd player hooked up to my tv. I tried to burn the movie to dvd once already and it worked but it does not play anywhere but on Linux. Also can .avi files and .vob files be played on dvd players? So if anyone can help, I don't know if there is a program that will help you do this I have not found anything, but as my past experiences show me with this site there are people here who can get answers when most people cant.

Thank You

mkv is a great format but probably needs the right codecs. In Windows you have to hunt out codecs yourself. When i go back to Windows i use the "Combined Community Codec Pack" as it seems to work well and provides quite a load of codecs and even players (even zoom player) in a tiny package. I've heard that there is one package that's much better but i can't remember it's name.

avi is a fairly standard format and most computers will be set up with the right codecs for a lot of avi's. I've even been able to play an avi on a standalone dvd player but i think it may have been a fairly advanced one.

I assumed that just dropping movies into a Braserro "new video project" would sort the whole thing out for you but there seem to have been a few people asking the same question in the last couple of days.

Good luck and happy hunting

Try the Medibuntu package, that's kind of the nearest equivalent in Ubuntu but contains more than just codecs so it should really fix up your multi-media apps

If you are still having trouble with this then please post it as a new question. Only the most recent questions tend to get looked at so posting/reposting a question just before america arrives online after work/school gives the best chance of getting a good few answers.
