how do I convert an avi file to enable me to burn

Asked by Mark

I have recently downloaded films but I am unable to convert them. How do I convert them to enable me to burn them. I have the files in an avi format and can play them through Totem Movie Player. What software can I use to convert the avi files to enable me to burn them through Nero Linux version 3.5.0.1?

I'd use Braserro from the "Sound&Video" sub-menu to burn them and burning them as avi's in a data project still allowed me to watch them on my friends posh tv with integral dvd player.

I don't think you'll need to convert the avi's just to be able to play them on a standalone dvd player. Just use Braserro.

I could easily be wrong though ...

PS pleeease let us know how it went if you try my idea

Tom,
I am new to Ubuntu, only had it for a couple of weeks so still trying to find my way around it including Brasero. If I am doing it correctly Brasero seems to change the .avi file to an .iso file. I tried burning the .avi file and the .iso files on numerous occasions. It seems to have burned a file when using the .iso file but my dvd players don't seem to see it. The DVD player says 'unknown disc'. I could do with a step by step guide to see if I am doing it correctly.

Something's going wrong. It took me a while to get used to Braserro too but now it's too easy to explain :(

When you open Braserro it has a splash-screen which offers 4 options? Choose "Data Project". Then drag the avi's from your normal file-browser into the empty white window/pane on the furthest right of the braserro window. The braserro window should have about 3 panes with vertical lines separating the panes?

If you don't get the splash-screen and just get straight into braserro then go up to the File menu and click on New Project - find Data Project in there.

It's interesting that you can get iso when that's what i'm struggling with but that you can't get at the easy stuff that i can't avoid. A classic!

Did you solve it? Was it just unfamiliarity? There have been a few similar questions worth exploring and i think some of them actually got some decent answers. Sometimes it's just luck and timings

Good luck, regards and thanks from
