I get an error when using +add for .wav files on a CD when trying to burn a project - message "Track 1.wav" can't be handled by gstreamer

Asked by David Johnston

I can play a CD with .wav files only on it, but cant use the +add to add them to the project in brasero

it always gives me the message
"Track 1.wav" can't be handled by gstreamer.
Make sure the appropriate codec is installed.

I have ubuntu intrepid (8.10) installed and have downloaded the gstreamer packages including the restricted extras for dvd. perhaps there are similar for cd but couldnt find so far - most searches give dvd problems and results etc.

I looked in the system log browser but couldnt see any relevant messages (but may not be looking in the right place).

is there a package I need ?

Hi David,

Please try installing ugly plugin. In terminal write:

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly

Hope that help you,
Thien

Thanks Thien for offering help.

I checked synaptic package manager and gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly is already installed.

I have tried using rhythmbox to extract the tracks.
It has created files on my home directory, nearly filling the small space assigned amongst the various users of this machine with *.oga files, but fitting OK.
I then tried using those files in a brasero project, and they can be read, but when I try burning the 750MB project, i get a different error from brasero saying not enough space on the location I selected.
the location is being automatically selected, and it is on the /tmp directory, which has nearly 1GB free.
I am now in the process of experimenting with redefining one of the free space partitions I set aside for growth to see if it actually is wanting extra space to work with on /tmp
if that fails, i will search for and if necessary raise a bug for brasero about that.

meanwhile, brasero still fails to handle .wav files even though I have the ugly plugins.
I would be glad of any other advice you or others can offer.

Hi,
I think this question should probably be converted to a bug or an enhancement suggestion.

After I defined one of the spare partitions I set aside to manage whichever of the filesystems ended up needing growth to be /tmp thereby increasing it from about 1MB to about 3MB, brasero was able to create the cd from the .oga files extracted using rhythmbox, but brasero had failed with the following errors when /tmp was only 1MB -
...
BraseroTranscode finished track successfully
BraseroTranscode called brasero_job_get_action
BraseroTranscode Output set (AUDIO) image = /tmp/brasero_tmp_6M59NU.cdr
BraseroTranscode called brasero_job_get_session_output_size
BraseroTranscode stopping
Session error : The location you chose to store the temporary image on does not have enough free space for the disc image (751 MiB needed) (brasero_burn_record burn.c:2524)

bug1:
There was no place for selecting the working directory other than /tmp (that I could readily find) in the burn project area
I think this is a bug.

bug2:
There is a second bug in that if I try to add .wav tracks direct from the cd the message is displayed as mentioned, even though rhythmbox can read the tracks and I am guessing it uses the same common facilities from gstreamer.
I notice that under the properties dialogue (next to the drop-down for "select a disc to write to") from the brasero copy cd 1:1 (instead of using the audio cd project option) there is a place to specify the temporary files location.

enhancement suggestion 1:
As well as fixing the bug where the burn process just fails and presents an error log rather than a clear error message, I would suggest adding the option for specifying the temporary files location to the create audio cd project option, or remove that selection to a common properties option setup dialogue.

Please advise how I should proceed to lodge the above 2 bugs and the enhancement suggestion.
Can the relevant detail be carried forward into those bug reports and enhancement reports from this question record ?
