Did you try any other applications like xfburn or gnomebaker?

I down loaded xfburn and tried again. This software failed as well. Which led me to have a closer look at the hardware. The box was purchased used and listed as having 2 cd/dvd burners. Well one is a ROM and the other is R/W. I restarted Brasero and the burn went as expected when the blank cd was placed in the R/W drive.

Sorry to have taken up your time. Although I do appreciate the cyber help. I have tried a half dozen books and none address the issues I have come across and I don't know anyone else who is venturing into Ubuntu.
