You should be able to install an even newer version from the standard Ubuntu software sources.
Is there a reason that you try to manually install an older version?

What command have you executed that you received the error message about gedit?

I tried the newest verion from 3 different souces and none worked so I thought i might try and older version and see if it worked. none have worked.. I am wondering if there is a specific program required to open the boinc install manager.

If you are running Ubuntu you should use the packages that have been prepared for Ubuntu.
There is a boinc package offered from the standard sources for the package management programs.

If you start software-center or synaptic you can search for boinc and select 'install' -> this should do an automatic installation without the need for a specific boinc installation manager.
If this installation attempt fails please provide the exact error message that is shown.

And if you want to stick to the old version that you downloaded, I guess you have to do the following:
Open a terminal (ctl-alt-t) and issue the command
/home/sbdaddy/Downloads/boinc_compat_6.6.41_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh
if this fails with an error message about missing executable access rights you have to issue the command
chmod o+x /home/sbdaddy/Downloads/boinc_compat_6.6.41_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh
first.
