Connection to Microsoft Designer Keyboard not possible

Asked by lum3n

Hello,

I'm trying to connect my Dell XPS 13 9343 to the Microsoft Designer keyboard and mouse (Bluetooth 4.0).

Via the GUI Tools I'm unable to connect any bluetooth device unfortunately. At least using bluetoothctl I managed to connect an old Logitech bluetooth mouse. When trying to connect the Microsoft mouse for example the tool returns that the connection was successful always.

[Designer Mouse]# connect C2:01:31:4D:2A:06
Attempting to connect to C2:01:31:4D:2A:06
Connection successful
[CHG] Device C2:01:31:4D:2A:06 Connected: no
[CHG] Device C2:01:31:4D:2A:06 Connected: yes

Unfortunately it is not useable afterwards. I also tried to trust or pair it beforehand which didn't change anything.

The syslog shows the following.

Jan 26 19:37:53 avion kernel: [ 435.845874] NET: Registered protocol family 38
Jan 26 19:37:53 avion bluetoothd[900]: Unable to register GATT service with handle 0x000e for device C2:01:31:4D:2A:06:
Jan 26 19:37:54 avion bluetoothd[900]: Error reading PNP_ID value: Attribute requires authentication before read/write
Jan 26 19:38:25 avion kernel: [ 468.649120] Bluetooth: SMP security requested but not available

Some days ago I managed to connect the mouse after several tries but I can't reproduce it. With the keyboard I wasn't successful at all.

Would you please be so kind to advice how to connect them?
If you need further information, let me know.

Thanks and regards,
lum3n

After reflecting this bug it may be better to start this as a question. Perhaps there is a simple solution that I haven't found yet. Sorry for the circumstances.

I managed to connect at least the mouse using the bluetoothctl tool as follows:

1) Following the instructions from here: http://askubuntu.com/a/660918
hciconfig hci0 sspmode 1
hciconfig hci0 down
hciconfig hci0 up

2) Using bluetoothctl
 pair C2:01:31:4E:2A:06
trust C2:01:31:4E:2A:06
connect C2:01:31:4E:2A:06

Unfortunately I can't get the keyboard to work:

[bluetooth]# connect EF:C0:CA:06:0C:53
Attempting to connect to EF:C0:CA:06:0C:53
Failed to connect: org.bluez.Error.Failed

When doing this nothing is written to the syslog.

I would be grateful if you have a hint for me.

Hi with the commands above posted by lum3n I managed to connect first the Microsoft Designer Mouse, then the keyboard.

Mouse worked fine immediately.
Keyboard didn't.

Then I updated bluez package (originally version 5.27 from Ubuntu 16.04) with version 5.41 from the Ubuntu Yakety repository. This works without any further version conflicts and the keyboards now works fine.

I guess that’s a good future market for Microsoft: Making nice gadgets for Linux machines...
