i cannot lauch blender

Hi blender 2.46+dfsg-4ubuntu does not launch in ubuntu 8.10
when i tried to run in via terminal typing blender
it returns me this:
Compiled with Python version 2.5.2.
Checking for installed Python... got it!

Many thanks about the question - suggestion: I have activated the accelerated graphics drivers of my NVIDIA graphic card and now blender works.
