How to remove unneeded language files

Asked by MikeR

Running lucid on a laptop with a rather small hard drive, I use localepurge to delete unwanted language files. However the removal is not complete; localepurge does not for example delete language-specific files in:
/usr/share/aptitude/aptitude-defaults.* and possibly in other places.
Dual questions:
1. Is there a tool that does a better cleanup job?
2. Is there a list somewhere of language-specific files that can be deleted without causing damage?

From what I can see in the descriptions of BleachBit it does clean away certain classes of files. But unless it is extremely configurable, it does _not_ delete unwanted language files or unneccessary font files. See an example in my original post.

If I am wrong about this please correct me.

The first package install after a new build is < localepurge >.

The first time you run the app, it asks you what lang files you want, and from then on out, whenever you use apt / dpkg / package manager etc, it removes all but what you've selected on the config screen, simple and automated. If you change your mind, run localepurge again to change the settings, job done.

Installed Bleachbit - which took approx 3MB
Had to run as root (sudo bleachbit)
In languages checked "en" only; Checked "Localization"
Running, deleted 11MB. Not a great saving, that will have to do...

Not installed.
This is a CLI (text mode) installation, with hand-picked apps installed (icewm, synaptic, mousepad etc.)

As an aside:
Bleachbit did _NOT_ delete the many aptitude language files. (See the example in my original question) so I did it manually.
