package bcmwl-kernel-source 5.60.48.36 bdcom-0ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: bcmwl kernel module failed to build

Asked by Deidre H

I have an Acer 5820T laptop and am trying to get internet connections working both Wifi and Ethernet.

I have set up the computer as dual boot Lucid 10.04 and Windows 7. I should note that I had to send back the laptop to Acer THREE (3) times to replace the hard drive. On the 3rd replacement, Acer updated BIOS to 1.18. I have been following the fixes on the various forums.

The only way I could get the ethernet to work was to install the 2.6.35-7 kernel. So, I now have ethernet working (Atheros AR8151 AtherosPCI-E) I tried other fixes suggested but this is the only one that would work.

Next I tried to update the Broadcom 802.1 Drivers using Administration-Hardware Drivers. But I get the error that it is not compatible with the 2.6.35 Kernel hence the bug report.

I have an Acer 5820T - 64 bit, and have been unable to get the WiFi Working (Broadcom 802.11n) under Lucid or Maverick. I have tried a variety of kernels and fixes as recommended on various forums and web sites. Lucid Kernels tried with patches: 2.6.32-21, 23,24, 25, 2.6.35-7.11 . I get errors when trying to install the broadcom drivers depending on the kernel, etc: bcwml-kernel source fails to build, bad return status error for module build, could not locate wl.ko for module bcwml in dkms tree. I have run the sudo apt-get patch, fakeroot, dkms, type fixes per forums and have uninstalled the broadcom drivers before starting any installs. Broadcom drivers cannot be installed using either synaptic or System-Admin-Hardware Drivers.

I am running the laptop dual boot with Windows 7 (I unfortunately have to use some windows apps) and all hardware works just fine in Win 7 .

Hopefully there is something simple I have forgotten to do. Any suggestions?
