help with terminal

I am new to linux.i tried to use the terminal for the intel graphics driver and clamav. i experienced problems with some commands.i wonder whether there is a user guide to download.
a problem i encountered was with` cd' when i was trying to change to a subdirectory.
another problem was with` make' and`make install'

To install clamav in Ubuntu, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Please COPY-PASTE each line below into the Terminal then hit <enter> after each line)

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install clamav clamav-daemon clamav-freshclam

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output from each command) on this thread

You can use the following graphical antivirus interfaces in Ubuntu:

# ClamTk using gtk2-perl. The project takes its name from the Tk libraries that were used when it was first started.
# KlamAV for KDE

I chose another antivirus .as for the terminal the browser can't find the place

Thank you and sorry for the newbie confusion.I used synaptic for clamav.The terminal answered that some repositories were unavailable at that time.
