Bash $HISTFILESIZE seems far too small by default.

Asked by Jim Howell

Is there any practical reason for the default history size to be only 500 lines?

I always make an effort to increase this on new machines, but sometimes I forget, and it has bitten me many times.

I would like to suggest increasing the value to something more useful, like 10000.

i don't know of any "pratical reasons". i asume the reason why HISTFILESIZE is set to 500 lines is because someone who first packaged bash wrote a bashrc with a HISTFILESIZE of 500.

you can report your suggestion as a wishlist bug here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bash
