That command is no longer used in newer versions. Upgrade to 12.04 or the latest 12.10 and you should be able to log in properly.

Ubuntu 10.10 is no-longer supported I recommend you upgrade to 12.04. 12.10 is the latest but 12.04 is an LTS version so its supported for longer.

Why use such an old (and no longer supported) release?

You will need to do a clean install. 10.10 will only upgrade to 11.04 but that's no-longer supported either. Backuo your data create a CD or USB stick and install.
