Dell inspiron 1525. no wifi connections. 11.10

Asked by PDG1

the output of all commands suggest in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WirelessTroubleshootingProcedure (aside from the two commands "sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep")

I have installed the additional drivers that were found for this computer, which was the broadcom sta wireless driver. The connection icon in the status bar, however, still doesn't show any wireless networks.

what has happened? :(

All your 4311 chip needs to function is the firmware, the b43 driver works and is present by default. To install the firmware, from a wired connection in a terminal, install the open source firmware:
sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
Or, install the Broadcom proprietary firmware (either firmware works for you, only one is necessary):
sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter
and accept the download offer.
Since you have installed the Broadcom STA driver, and that driver was not working under 11.04, I'll assume it still is not working under 11.10, you need to get rid of it, and all the configuration files that it brought along which suppress the working b43 driver. Try deactivating it from the "additional drivers" window. Then check that the line "blacklist b43" (just that exact line, not others like it) has been removed from anyplace in /etc/modprobe.d
grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*
Edit the file and delete the line.
Wireless should now work for you.

when i had 11.04 the wifi was working... but I think you're right, I think It may not have been the Broadcom STA driver that it was using.
I'll give that a try when I get back to the machine tho :) Thanks

so... i just turned the darn thing on again and it started working.
I haven't tried anything new. I had already tried rebooting it multiple times before and after installing and removing drivers.
as far as i can tell it just magically started working.
I'm not sure if there's some information i should include now that it's working for comparison...
I'm kind of scared that it'll just magically stop working.

Thanks for the help anyway :p
