wireless not working on acer aspire 1430z, new install of natty

Asked by Crystal

Hi,

I just got an acer aspire laptop/netbook and can't get natty to recognize the wireless card even after reinstalling STA broadcom drivers under additional drivers.

Help!

I ran:
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|usb|witch|wl'; iwconfig; cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|witch|wl'; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo lsmod

And got: (if this helps)

This is normally a bug in some application using the D-Bus library.

Install wicd and tell it to use eth1 as the wireless (if it doesn't already pickup wireless networks)

Installed wicd, it's using eth1 as wireless and appears to be connected, however, firefox isn't able to use the connection. ?

Network manager is still running concurrently and says there's no wireless (when I check "enable wireless" "wireless is disabled" is still greyed-out and no connections are offered).

Actionparsnip,

Nope. Network unavailable.

Nope, unless I'm connected via ethernet.

I've restarted twice now since installing wicd, and on this second reinstall - the wireless works! It's slow and keeps going down (I'm sitting next to the router, so it's not a strength of signal issue) but this is further than I've previously got!

Just before the last reboot I ran
gksu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
and added this line
blacklist acer-wmi

(Trying random things from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Aspire1810TZ/Karmic in the hopes that something fixes this issue -- either wicd or this seems to have done the trick!)

Thank you!

This seems to be it - I removed that blacklist and it refused to recognize the wireless again. Put it back on there and it's working again.

I'm thrilled to have a wirelss connection, but will now be hoping for a fix of the connect-disconnect-connect problem.

Thank you so much for your help!!
