Firefox on ubunto v10.10 non parte

try:

sudo chown -R stuart /home/stuart

Have you been running commands like:

sudo gedit
sudo nautilus

by any chance?

I tried sudo chown -R stuart /home/stuart
the error massage is. chown: cannot access `/home/stuart/.gvfs': Permission denied

sudo is NOT for gui apps like gedit and nautilus. This is exactly why you are having this issue. sudo is ONLY for cli apps like cp, mv, ln, apt-get etc. If you need to run gui apps with elevated priveledges then use gksudo (for gnome) and kdesudo (for kde). These set up the environment correctly and do not garbage file ownerships as you are now seeing. I have seen countless guides with commands like

sudo gedit /etc/fstab

and other such nonesense. This is WRONG.

you could try:

sudo chown stuart ~/azScript

You have basically garbaged some / all of the permissions on your own user files with your use of sudo for gui apps

OK, you see the files marked with stuart stuart

That is how its supposed to be. The owner is you and the owning group is your named group

The ones marked with stuart root are not good as the group 'root' owns them, you need to chown them so they are all marked stuart stuart and not stuart root

you should use:

sudo chown -R $USER:$USER /home/$USER

This will set the user and group ownership to how it should be. Here is mine for reference:

Do you understand why you DON'T use sudo for gui apps now? You can technically use gksudo for both.

I personally email ALL guides I see that state sudo gedit and other such nonesense to get them to change it so others dont get in the same predicament you are in.
