AVIDEMUX : trouble initializing audio device

With Avidemux 2.1.2
When I play my files .avi (come frome a camera), the audio doesn't work and the error message appears : "trouble initializing audio device" ;
(the video is ok)

preference > audio > ESD

This is what worked for me in Ubuntu 8.04.1 with avidemux 2.4.1:

Edit>Preferences>Audio
Change Audio Output to ALSA
Under ALSA Device type: default

So did
preferences -> Audio -> pulse
