ok AWN needs a compositing window manager. Are you running compiz (desktop effects, cube desktop etc) or KDE?

If you do not have 3D support in your system then AWN will not run

Secondly: You do not need to manually download aWN, it is on the repositorys

You can install it by running:

sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator

And it will install for you

This is incorrect. Please see our installation prerequisites section on our wiki:

http://wiki.awn-project.org/Installation:Prerequisites

As to the problem at hand, make sure that the avant-window-navigator package is installed. If you want more than just the Launcher/Taskmanager applet, make sure that one or more of the awn-applet-* packages are installed.
