AutoKey: GUI not showing

Asked by lpandz

I installed autokey-gtk 0.71.2-1 from the USC (Ubuntu Software Center), launched AK (AutoKey_v0.71.2-1), and got greeted with the GUI. I recall having unticked a setting that goes something like: "Place icon on the tray". That proved to be fatal to the GUI: I can only end AK via systemMonitor. Launching AK won't show the GUI. I next tried to uninstall and then re-install, but it was as if the uninstall or it's attempt (again via USC) did'nt happen. I not only have the same no-GUI AK in my Ubuntu_v11.10 computer, the same phrases I earlier made is still there... working! I expected everything to be removed, else a query pop-up if I want to also remove the phrase_file. Apparently, the app and the userdata was not removed at all!@#? Anyways, what I want for the moment is to get back to having the GUI and make more phrases. How do I get back the GUI?

In my search for a solution to my issue with AutoKey, in the USC (Ubuntu Software Center), I found the "dummy transitional package for autokey-qt" and then installed it, found "AutoKey(QT)" at the USC and then installed it, and finally, uninstalled AutoKey(GTK). The icon for AutoKey(QT) is now at my applications lens, and the icon for Autokey(GTK) is now gone there. I then clicked the AutoKey(QT) icon to launch it.

With the AutoKey(QT) app running, an icon was placed at the panel. Then, at the Settings > Configure AutoKey, at the "General" section, I saw the "Show a tray icon (requires restart)" setting currently ticked. I made sure to leave that ticked, clicked the window to dismiss it, and then closed AutoKey(QT). I then launched AutoKey(QT) again and confirmed that an icon is existing at the panel. Good, the issue I have with the not showing a GUI/user-window is now solved. I don't want to try unticking that "Show a tray icon (requires restart)" setting ever again !

In retrospect:
1] The AutoKey (QT) seem to be a better rendition (not a better version for the version is the same at 0.71.2-1 ) than AutoKey (GTK).
2] I don't think a user should be given an option to not display the icon at the tray/panel for this particular class of application. But that's a story for another day. For now, my issue with the AutoKey app is solved!

<Super>k (Ctrl-k on my machine) brings up the gui, even if the tray icon isn't shown.
