How do I back up installed Unbuntu software and software preferences?

Asked by Energizor

Hi,

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx.
Is this how I can back up all my installed software and preserve the software preferences and software configurations of each application?

1) Use APTonCD to create an .iso image.

2) Add the APTonCD image to System/Administration/Software Sources

3) Use the following APT line: deb file:///home/repository lucid
*Is it necessary to add "main, multiverse, restricted, universe, etc." to the above APT line?

4) Use Synaptic Package Manager to install my software.

5) To restore my software preferences, back up the whole Home folder. Copy and paste the backed up home folder into the existing home folder.

Is all of this correct? Thank you!

Hi,

Thanks for the advice, but I am a novice. I don't know how to use those articles.

Is there an easy way to back up and restore the Home folder? Can I copy a back up of /home and simply paste it into the existing /home folder, thereby replacing it?

Thanks!

Please describe your goal.
Would you like to migrate to a new hard drive and using 10.04 again?
Or just backup and then install a newer Ubuntu release, if yes, which release version?

Is there currently a separate /home partition?
If uncertain please open a terminal: ctrl+alt+t
Enter:
sudo fdisk -l

Please post the output here. Thanks.

Make an extra /home partition on the new hard drive. There won't be issues when username and password stay the same.

Can you help with this problem?
