I was trying to watch a dvd on my laptop and got this message. However, I discovered that I cannot update the system due to this error.

E: Type 'Major' is not known on line 10 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

When I want to run the update manager, the system show that the access is denied ans the following message:

Could not initialize the package information

A unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

'E:Type 'Major' is not known on line 10 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list, E:The list of sources could not be read.'

Is anyone can assit me ?

Thank you.

Jean Claude

Hello,

Can you paste the content of your /etc/apt/sources.list file ?

I was trying to do something in the terminal (not knowing what I was doing) from instructions on a web site to get a program. After finally giving up, I was left with this red thing at the top right corner that said pretty close to the same thing. When I tried to open package manager (still not knowing what I'm doing), I got this message:

E: Type '“deb' is not known on line 44 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

How do I make this and the red thing go away?
