running:

tar xf yourfile.tar.gz

will extract the contents.

I tend to avoid it. Getting programs from a package manager is much the best way of installing stuff. Go up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager

it asks for normal user password, not SuperUser/Root. Either search tool. Right-click to install anything you want to install that's not marked by a green blob (means its already installed). Click on "Apply"

Hope this helps
Good luck and regards from

dedar,

the easiest way is - create a folder into your /home folder, move/copy the tar file into the newly created folder then right click on it and select Extract here option - the file contents will be extracted.

as far as installation is concerned, you'll find among the extracted files

readme and/or install files that tell you how to go about getting it installed.
