Which folders do you have to backup?

Asked by oss_test_launchpad

I have a crashed system which needs a fresh install. Which folders would I have to backup except the /home directory?

well,

/etc/apt/sources.list

contains your sources which you might want to copy as well. You could also backup your firefox bookmarks by exporting them and backing them up. Maybe you are also interested in noting down which additional programs you had installed on your old system.

Thank you for this information! Bookmarks are hidden somewhere in the .mozilla-firefox folder anyway, right? (See https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/63568.)

Yes, I guess they are. It depends on how you want to re-import them. It should work if you just put the .mozilla folder in your new home directory, but if there is a problem with it (there might because it's a completely new system into which you paste it), you would have your bookmarks backed up in an html file.

Hello,
I'd also backup /var/cache/apt/archives to avoid having to download again the updated packages.

Can you help with this problem?
