issues while trying to update to a new kernel version

Asked by Mario Frieden on 2017-05-18

Hello,
for a while now i can't update to newer kernel versions. I tried with apt-get and the Ubuntu software center as well. The main issue isn't the missing disk space in my boot partition. Whenever i clean up so there is enough space, the update procedure tries to install older kernel image versions filling up my boot partition again and the update fails.

So here's a copy of the commands recommended from the support forum:

user:~$ sudo dpkg --audit
The following packages have been unpacked but not yet configured.
They must be configured using dpkg --configure or the configure
menu option in dselect for them to work:
linux-signed-image-generic Signed Generic Linux kernel image
linux-signed-generic Complete Signed Generic Linux kernel and headers
linux-image-extra-3.13.0-65-generic Linux kernel extra modules for version 3.1
 linux-image-generic Generic Linux kernel image
 linux-signed-image-3.13.0-117-generic Signed kernel image generic
linux-generic Complete Generic Linux kernel and headers

The following packages are only half configured, probably due to problems
configuring them the first time. The configuration should be retried using
dpkg --configure <package> or the configure menu option in dselect:
initramfs-tools tools for generating an initramfs
linux-image-extra-3.13.0-117-generic Linux kernel extra modules for version 3.
linux-image-3.13.0-65-generic Linux kernel image for version 3.13.0 on 64 bit
linux-firmware Firmware for Linux kernel drivers

Your boot partition seems to be full.

Please provide the output of the commands

df -h
df -i
dpkg -l | grep ' linux-i'

Hello, thank you for your reply
Yes, my boot partition is full. the issue is that even after cleaning up the update process tries to install older kernel headers - and , because it gets to the partition limit, it fails.
I usually have a set of 3 kernels in my boot partition. One is active, both others are backup. So i always back up the files of the previous (but the 3 remaining) ones to a different location making room for a next kernel update. As you can see
below, it shows a bit of the history of the older kernels i backuped.

dpkg -l | grep 'linux-i'

1. Please provide the output of
df -h

2. What kind of "backup" are you talking of? The list shows that you have more than 40 version of the kernel package installed in their default location.
I do not see any necessity for having more than three versions of the kernel packages at all (not even in a backup location).

What output do you get for the command
apt-get --simulate autoremove
?

Well i guess i may have a mixed-up configuration file somewhere, like sources.list and/or dependency problems i don't know how to fix...

1.
maypole@CIRID43:~$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
udev 1.9G 12K 1.9G 1% /dev
tmpfs 385M 976K 384M 1% /run
/dev/dm-1 454G 142G 289G 33% /
none 4.0K 0 4.0K 0% /sys/fs/cgroup
none 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock
none 1.9G 160K 1.9G 1% /run/shm
none 100M 60K 100M 1% /run/user
/dev/sda2 237M 227M 0 100% /boot
/dev/sda1 511M 2.6M 509M 1% /boot/efi
/home/maypole/.Private 454G 142G 289G 33% /home/maypole

2.
I did a manual copy of the outdated kernel packages (i always left the 3 newest in /boot) to another location which i clean up reguarly, just in case.
The step i forgot because i didn't know it from the beginning is what you've been asking me for in 3. (apt-get autoremove)

3. (a copy of the output i postet yet in my first post)
maypole@CIRID43:~$ LANG=C;sudo apt-get --purge autoremove

"/dev/sda2 237M 227M 0 100% /boot"
Your boot partition is completely full.

I assume the solution to your problem will be to manually delete the kernel image files of the oldest installed kernel, then try to get the package management system back into a consistent state, and finally instruct the package management to uninstall the outdated kernel packages.

What is the output of the command
ls -l /boot
?

Mario Frieden (mfrieden) said : #6

thank you,
it took me a while to do the work but it helped to delete the old kernel files and after some further steps cleaning up the machine and reconfiguration, apt is doing the job again.
