how to setup ubuntu domain and mail server without internet connection

Asked by Nay Myo Win

i would like to setup ubuntu domain controller and mail server at home. My home server has no internet connection.

i have internet access at workonly.

Office PC has 512MB with XP only and no other non office standard software like Virtual box or VMware can be installed.

the worst thing, is ubuntu is not like other distro like opensuse or Redhat which comes with DVD and all server components are not supposed to be downloaded more.

in ubuntu , all must be got from apt-get with internet access

so , for my case, the only thing i can do is have to broswe to direct download link from Windows and download and save with flash drive and take it back to home and install on my home server for server components and setup.

APTOnCD is nothing for me coz i can't use linux at work.

so could you tell me how to download necessary file for specific server task.??? and how to run on server?

i have tried packages.ubuntu.com before. there are many .deb files and dependencies.

for example, for bind9, direct link is that.
http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/b/bind9/bind9_9.5.0.dfsg.P2-1ubuntu3.1_i386.deb

but there are many dependencies for it. so , how can i download them all in flash drives??

in ubuntu, we dont need to worry about that, apt-get install will solve all things necessary.

how can I do download complete server task components+ dependencies included?? and how to install on server??

Hi,

I did not understand your first question;)

You can find a DVD of unbuntu Hardy here http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/ubuntu-cdimage/releases/hardy/release/
The list of packages from the DVD here ftp://cdimage.ubuntu.com/cdimage/releases/hardy/release/ubuntu-8.04.1-dvd-amd64.list

The dvd contains samba and bind.

Hope this help.

The Ubuntu Server Edition Cd contains all the stuff you need for a server - so download that at work and make a Cd of it
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/getubuntu/download

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

However the Server Edition is command-line only. there's no desktop gui for it. this is because it's much more secure to run servers this way. Any gui desktop automatically introduces features that make a system slightly more vulnerable. However you presumably want to run a gui desktop so download and make a cd of the standard desktop version.

Install one of these to your machine and then use the other as a repository to add in the packages you want. Personnaly i would be tempted to install the Server-Edition and then use apt-get to install the gnome-desktop and stuff from the destop-edition cd

The dvd version only really adds in the different language packs - it doesn't have much else extra as it's not normally required. Also it's worth hunting around in here for answer to the questions about getting updates via a different (non-networked) machine. Quite a few people ask and seem to get good answers. Most of us live in a world dominated by Windows so you're not alone there ;)

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Probably best to just install Ubuntu Sever Edition as a dual-boot so that you can choose when to use Ubuntu and when to use whatever you are using right now.
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/getubuntu/download
downloading the newest one from this link will give you most of the latest updates. So it should set you up fine with a strong usable system :)

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

Note that server edition is all based on the command-line but when you install it with everything plugged in it should pick up on what it needs to install from the Cd

Good luck and regards from

I think so. Try installing Ubuntu Server Edition as a dual-boot so that you don't lose anything you already have setup and can go back to whatever Operating System you are currently trying to run. If there are specific problems then we can deal with them later for you.

If you are still having trouble with this then please post it as a new question. Only the most recent questions tend to get looked at so posting/re-posting a question just before america arrives online after work/school gives the best chance of getting a good few answers - such is the nature of the internet.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion

If the problem has been resolved then please follow the link to the forum thread and mark it as Solved but please give us a clue how you did manage to solve it and also use the button under where you type stuff in rather than giving me karma credit points for just sending this note to you.

Apologies, good luck and many regards from
Tom :)

Brilliant, nicely done. Always good to hear. Please give us a brief description on how you solved it and whether postfix or exim4 is in the Server Edition. Voluntary contributions like that are the way we keep adding to the knowledge about ubuntu and linux generally.

Thanks, best wishes and regards from
Tom :)
