"Asudo apt-get remove amavisd-new

Asked by Thomas

Yesterday they were working fine but today everytime I try to install anything using "Add/Remove Applications" or "Synaptic Package Manager" I get this:

dpkg: syntax error: unknown user 'amavis' in statoverride file
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)
A package failed to install. Trying to recover:

I don't know what the heck "amavis" is or how it got to be a user. Thanks for any help.

Thank you for your reply but I got impatient after trying everything that was suggested to me on the forums without any success that I just re-installed Ubuntu. Sure is a lot easier than re-installing Windows! Ebverything is working fine now. Thanks again Carles.

Claudia,

This is a very old question that has been marked 'solved' hence most of us will never see your request as this is a very busy forum. Repost a NEW question and provide some details. Telling us of a bug (but not a url to the bug) and a error and message doesn't offer much to work with.

Sorry,, I thought I had link this question with the answer that worked for my exact error. Question #125380 is what I followed because my error was unrecoverable. I will try linking again but I am not too sure. Thanks for your response jeruvy.

The exact error I was getting was : "unrecoverable fatal error syntax error amavis in statoverride file sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned error code 2"

It was resolved in Question 125380 by Mark Rijckenberg 2010-09-14

Hope this helps remove any confusion I created, I appoligize.

Claudia
