If you run:

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get --reinstall install nano

Is it OK?

Part of your outout

cp: error reading ‘/var/lib/dpkg/info/libdaemon0.list’: Input/output error
cp: failed to extend ‘/var/lib/dpkg.backup/info/libdaemon0.list’: Input/output error

This might indicate a file system problem.

I suggest that you boot into a live system (by booting an Ubuntu installation kit on DVD or USB stick in the "Try Ubuntu without installing" mode) and perform a full file system check on /dev/sda1

Manfred,

Performed a full file system check on /dev/sda1 and everything is OK.

Here is the output your requested:

philip@philip-A35:~$ sudo dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/nano_2.2.6-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb

Try

sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/info/libdaemon0.list
sudo dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/nano_2.2.6-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb

and report the result.

Ok, this file apparently was broken.
To get rid of the warning message ("file list missing"), issue the command

sudo apt-get install --reinstall libdaemon0

and then the package management system should be fully functional again.
