Did everything on your list and still can't get dpkg to load. Now it says it is being used by another progran.

Looks fine. What are you trying to install?

Thank you for helping with this as it has been an ongoing issue for more than a month. I'm trying to install the dpkg so that I can install the bcmwl. My broadcom network card isn't working so I don't have Ethernet or wifi Just a very, very, very slow wired connection running about 15MiB. If you notice on the documentation I provided above that anything to do with dpkg either comes up as bad, or nothing was loaded.

Also if you notice towards the bottom where it says "DKMS: install completed" directly after that is a "q" that is where I waited for more the 3hrs for it to continue with the install of the dpkg but it never happens. also notice that nothing after that point is posted properly all the "david@david-MX6422:~$" are standing alone and the commands are next to them. I don't know why . I would copy from list and go to paist but when I did it went to the next line. And there is no Audit at the end. I did eventually get a Audit later that night This is what it consisted of.

david@david-MX6422:~$ sudo dpkg --audit
[sudo] password for david:
The following packages are only half configured, probably due to problems
configuring them the first time. The configuration should be retried using
dpkg --configure <package> or the configure menu option in dselect:
bcmwl-kernel-source Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver source

I've attempted to run the command but it comes up with either the package is busy .... so I log out log back in and get the message /var/lib/dpkg/ locked.

It's been the same cycle over and over, Software Updater goes to update dpkg uninstalls everything , goes to reinstall gets to the point of DKMS: install completed. and stops. It did the same thing yesterday and I haven't touched it

I just noticed this

wl.ko:
 - Uninstallation
   - Deleting from: /lib/modules/3.19.0-49-generic/updates/dkms/
 - Original module
   - No original module was found for this module on this kernel. <---- Is this a issue?
   - Use the dkms install command to reinstall any previous module version. <------ Is this something that I'm suppose to do?

If you have a wired connection (no matter what speed), then I recommend the following:
Remove the half-installed package with the wireless driver, and then run the wireless troubleshooting procedure to get full diagnostics about your wireless hardware.

Issue the command
sudo dpkg --purge bcmwl-kernel-source

and then follow https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WirelessTroubleshootingProcedure
and paste all output into this question document that you have already created.

Can you help with this problem?
