Shutdown Problem

So i have been turning off my computer by plugging out the cable out for the last two weeks because i cant shutdown ubuntu, it just freezes and wont turn off. I can reboot but not shutdown. Im using ubuntu 14.04.

Do either of the terminal commands below work?

sudo poweroff

sudo shutdown -h now

sudo poweroff and sudo shutdown -h now doesn't work.
