scanning for btrfs file systems hangup

Asked by katherine

A popup dialog box asked me whether to begin installing software and security updates.
(I hope that it was legitimate. Having recently upgraded to 14.04, I thought the dialog box was a 14.04 feature.)

After I allowed the update, there was a pause and then a message indicating that the system needed to reboot.
The system, however, asked for confirmation to shut down, so I confirmed that.
After manually restarting, I saw a black screen containing only the following:

Scanning for Btrfs file systems
_

The machine has been stuck on that screen for an hour.
I cannot reboot the machine.
Closing the laptop does not activate sleep mode.
The black screen remains.

What do I do?

To shut down the laptop when the system is really hung, you can hold down the power key for about 4 seconds.

Then try to reboot normally. If it works OK, it not, hold down the shift key while booting. This will result in a menu at boot time.
At first try to choose the previous kernel version there. If that still does not work, try the recovery mode.

Can you help with this problem?
