I've combed the internet far and wide for a solution to this problem. Tried restoring old backups, etc. Although I've found numerous forums with very similar issues, none are quite the same as this one, and thus the solutions to those problems aren't helpful here. I don't have synaptic, and as apt seems to be "broken," I cannot download anything. Thanks in advance for ANY possible solutions.

If you have apt-get and software centre, why would you need Synaptic?

Your problem seems quite similar to bug #1072017 and several other ones.

Most of these problems were caused by hardware errors, and it should be checked whether you have the same root cause.
Can you please:
1. open a terminal and issue the command
dmesg > ~/dmesg.log
2. upload the file ~/dmesg.log to http://pastebin.ubuntu.com
3. post the link that you receive from pastebin in this question document.

Sorry, but the command dmesg > ~/dmesg.log doesn't produce any results.

Hello Brent. There are not any result because output of a 'dmesg' command is in 'dmesg.log' file. So if you ran this command in your home directory, please see if there is a 'dmesg.log' file. If it was a different directory e.g. '/tmp', just search there.

By the way, this is the only additional information - the result of examine or control the kernel ring buffer provided by 'dmesg' command can be found in: 1) '/var/log/dmesg' file and 2) by running 'dmesg' (without quotes) command in a terminal/console.

One more thing. I see a message about duplicate 'sources.list' entry. Pleas check it for example via '/etc/apt/sources.list' file or by 'software-properties-gtk' command (it's a graphical method, so choose "Other Software" tab next select one of the duplicate entry and press the "Remove" button). There is also an information which suggesting to run 'apt-get update' to correct these problems.

Best regards.

apt-get update provides similar results to all other commands, producing a "duplicate sources.list entry" and recommending running apt-get update once again. :

Remove:

deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu precise partner
deb-src http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu precise partner

From /etc/apt/sources.list

Should clean up the duplicate

Deleting those lines definitely cleaned up the duplicate issue, however the unmet dependency issue remains. Even after reattempting to run apt-get update and apt-get -f install. Update manager still not functioning properly either.

I just threw in the towel, created a new backup, and reinstalled Ubuntu. Problem solved. Thanks for the input!
