It looks like the commands fixed your system and allowed the packages to install. The Warnings/Errors probablyy occur because you cleared everything out. The only other thing I see that's problematic is that you're using the saucy repo of medibuntu (should be raring):

Get:3 http://packages.medibuntu.org saucy Release.gpg [198 B]
Get:10 http://packages.medibuntu.org saucy Release [7,815 B]
Get:13 http://packages.medibuntu.org saucy/free amd64 Packages [3,234 B]

Why have you added a Saucy package source to your OS?

Yes - thanks! That does seem to have resolved the problem: I've got my functionality back now. If it's of any use/related to the problem, I was attempting to install virtualbox and got/still get a package discrepancy error (virtualbox-qt: Depends: libgcc1 (>= 1:4.1.1) but 1:4.7.3-1ubuntu1 is to be installed
Depends: libqt4-network (>= 4:4.5.3) but 4:4.8.4+dfsg-0ubuntu9.2 is to be installed
Depends: libqt4-opengl (>= 4:4.7.2) but 4:4.8.4+dfsg-0ubuntu9.2 is to be installed
Depends: libqtcore4 (>= 4:4.8.0) but 4:4.8.4+dfsg-0ubuntu9.2 is to be installed
Depends: libqtgui4 (>= 4:4.8.0) but 4:4.8.4+dfsg-0ubuntu9.2 is to be installed
Depends: libstdc++6 (>= 4.6) but 4.7.3-1ubuntu1 is to be installed
Depends: virtualbox (= 4.2.10-dfsg-0ubuntu2.1) but 4.2.10-dfsg-0ubuntu2.1 is to be installed) but I suspect that's a separate error and so only mention it on the off-chance that there's a link.

Hi,

I can only assume they were added as part of a program I've loaded - it
wasn't a deliberate action. Possibly Boinc, Synergy, Handbrake or Jitsi -
they're the only "non-standard" installations I can recall off the top of my
head.

I'm quite happy to dig a bit deeper if it will help.

I could always remove them (if I knew how, I'm still an Ubuntu novice) and
see what happens...
