How to download failing repositories?

Asked by Navin Talati

I am unable to download some of the repositories' updates to my machine. The O.S. Is Ubuntu 12.04. This may be the reason that I am unable in Successful Installations of some of the softwares like Blender and SweetHome3D. My efforts and their respective outputs are given in (1), (2), and (3) as under:

(1). When I Reload Synaptic Package Manager, they shows error as under:

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

You can also clean up with:

sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/getdeb.list.bck

As it is causing those warnings.

You do not need cheleb's dead PPA, nor do you need getdeb.list.bck to install blender or sweethome-3d

Run this command to install both:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install sweethome-3d blender

I applied above commands.
Now, CHECKING the Update Manager, RELOADING the Synaptic Package Manager and
COMMANDS of "sudo apt-get update" & " sudo apt-get upgrade" in the Terminal does not
give any NEGATIVE Outputs as mentioned earlier.
I think, the Residues of previously installed DEAD PPA are also removed.
It seems everything is rectified through above THREE commands' implementation in
the TERMINAL.
The PROBLEM IS SOLVED.
Many thanks to you all

Sir,
I am giving the additional information. As per instruction in the warning mentioned in the above (previous) step, I applied the command: "sudo apt-cdrom" and the output is as under.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
navin@navin:~$ sudo apt-cdrom
[sudo] password for navin:
apt 0.9.7.5ubuntu5.1 for i386 compiled on Dec 12 2012 13:48:04
Usage: apt-cdrom [options] command

apt-cdrom is a tool to add CDROM's to APT's source list. The
CDROM mount point and device information is taken from apt.conf
and /etc/fstab.

Commands:
   add - Add a CDROM
ident - Report the identity of a CDROM

Options:
  -h This help text
  -d CD-ROM mount point
  -r Rename a recognized CD-ROM
  -m No mounting
-f Fast mode, don't check package files
  -a Thorough scan mode
--auto-detect Auto detect drive and mount point
  -c=? Read this configuration file
-o=? Set an arbitrary configuration option, eg -o dir::cache=/tmp
See fstab(5)
navin@navin:~$

I am unable to understand the meaning of the content.
Would you please explain the meaning ?

The explanation to the error messages that you see is as follows:

The package management programs for installing additional programs and for implementing updates looks at some configuration files to find the information from which sources the packages can be downloaded.
One of the frequent problems is that when you install packages from a CD/DVD, this CD/DVD is also deemed a valid repository source for the future. And later, when you have removed the CD/DVD from its drive, and you check for new package updates, you will receive the error message that you have seen ("W:Failed to fetch cdrom://Ubuntu 12.04 ...").

There are two ways to correct that:
1. By manually editing the configuration file
2. By using graphical tools

ad 1:
open a terminal and issue the command
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
This will ask for your password and the will open an editor with your sources.list file loaded.
You have to look for the lilnes that start with cdrom (usually the very first lines), and have to insert a # character at the beginning of this line (or these lines).
When you have done that save the file and close the editor.

ad 2:
Open software-center and select from the menu "Edit -> Software sources"
This will open a dialogue window as seen here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu#Ubuntu_Software_Tab
In that box you should see a text about CD-ROM/DVD. You have to mage sure that there is NO tickmark besides that CD/DVD entry.
There night also be an entry for a CD/DVD on the second tab ("Other Software"); you have to deselect als any CD entry on the second tab see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu#Third-Party_Software_Tab

If you have done one of the two actions above, the software installation and update processes should no more complain about the missing CD.

Sir,
Thank you very much for the prompt and exectly to the point reply with a fragrance of guidance.
I applied the means of manually editing the configuration file.
as per "ad 1:" shown in your reply #11, I issued the command "gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list", gave the password, and the "editor" was opened-up. Inserted "#" character in the begining of the line which was started with cdrom (it was first line). I saved the change as "Untitled Document 1" in File System.
(1)
Is this ok? Or should I save it in any other specific folder?
(2)
After this procedure, when I opened the "File System" and from this I opened "Untitled Document 1" , I found there was nothing visible ! It appeared totally blank. Shoud it be so ? Why ?

Above TWO questions are confusing me. Please reply.

On other side, the problem is solved. Software Updater, Synaptic Package Manager, and USC are working properly. I can install available software/application from USC. Throgh terminal, I updated and upgraded the system. Itupgraded about 185 packages (191 MB) and works o.k. now.
Thanks a lot.
Regards.

This is a known bug. When starting gedit with gksudo you will see in
addition to the file that you want to edit another "untitled document 1" in
a second tab. Just ignore it.
Apparently you were able to solve your original problem, and that is the key
point.

Subject: Re: [Question #207163]: How to download failing repositories?

Question #207163 on apt in Ubuntu changed:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+question/207163

    Status: Answered => Open

Navin Talati is still having a problem:
Sir,
Thank you very much for the prompt and exectly to the point reply with a
fragrance of guidance.
I applied the means of manually editing the configuration file.
as per "ad 1:" shown in your reply #11, I issued the command "gksudo gedit
/etc/apt/sources.list", gave the password, and the "editor" was
opened-up. Inserted "#" character in the begining of the line which was
started with cdrom (it was first line). I saved the change as "Untitled
Document 1" in File System.
(1)
Is this ok? Or should I save it in any other specific folder?
(2)
After this procedure, when I opened the "File System" and from this I opened
"Untitled Document 1" , I found there was nothing visible ! It appeared
totally blank. Shoud it be so ? Why ?

Above TWO questions are confusing me. Please reply.

On other side, the problem is solved. Software Updater, Synaptic Package
Manager, and USC are working properly. I can install available
software/application from USC. Throgh terminal, I updated and upgraded the
system. Itupgraded about 185 packages (191 MB) and works o.k. now.
Thanks a lot.
Regards.
