Package dependencies cannot be resolved in 11.10
i have just installed the ubuntu 11.10. when i install any software from the software center, it is always showing
package dependencies can not be resolved and the message is (This error could be caused by required additional software packages which are missing or not installable. Furthermore there could be a conflict between software packages which are not allowed to be installed at the same time.)

You are using a proxy server for your Internet connection:

The proxy server defined in /etc/apt/apt.conf is probably causing all the problems.
Have you tried turning the proxy off by removing ALL references to the proxy in /etc/apt/apt.conf ?
I checked the following site:

There are four proxy servers for "Airtel Link". You could try one of the other 3 proxy servers by defining of the other proxy servers in /etc/apt/apt.conf
You should test the Internet connection OUTSIDE the IIT, Kharagpur network to see if the problem is only due to their proxy servers.
Are you using an "Airtel Link" or "BSNL Link"?
This is crucial information that should have been added into the original description to speed up the troubleshooting process.
That is why I have decided to add an extra command to the following procedure:
