Displays errors after installing software using apt-get or software center even tho software is actually installing

Asked by Clinton Bridge

whenever i install software or packages (including updates) using apt-get or software center, i get error messages even tho the software does install and work properly
I think it may have something to do with samba?
Also i am unable to see other computers on my network, yet those computers are able of use the printer on this computer.
Both of these problems happened at the same time so i feel have the one cause.
I run ubuntu 11.10 16-generic

#
# Sample configuration file for the Samba suite for Debian GNU/Linux.
#
#
# This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
# smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
# here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options most of which
# are not shown in this example
#
# Some options that are often worth tuning have been included as
# commented-out examples in this file.
# - When such options are commented with ";", the proposed setting
# differs from the default Samba behaviour
# - When commented with "#", the proposed setting is the default
# behaviour of Samba but the option is considered important
# enough to be mentioned here
#
# NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command
# "testparm" to check that you have not made any basic syntactic
# errors.
# A well-established practice is to name the original file
# "smb.conf.master" and create the "real" config file with
# testparm -s smb.conf.master >smb.conf
# This minimizes the size of the really used smb.conf file
# which, according to the Samba Team, impacts performance
# However, use this with caution if your smb.conf file contains nested
# "include" statements. See Debian bug #483187 for a case
# where using a master file is not a good idea.

Hi there,
thanks for the link.
I read throu and followed the instructions from Roger Hunwicks (roger-tonic-solutions) #8
and also UndiFineD (k.dejong) #12,
then i got an error saying the server role didn't match in the smb.conf file, so i took a look and it was set to standalone, so to me it looked right.
I then restored my old smb.conf file and got my original error, realm = not specified, i tried adding realm = ACER-UBUNTU (name of my computer) as i have no idea what it should equal,
I then tried to install something and now the error i get is

ProvisioningError: guess_names: 'server role=standalone' in domain controller must match chosen server role '/etc/samba/smb.conf'! Please remove the smb.conf file and let provision generate it

I had a look in my smb.conf file there is no 'server role' entry?

where to from here?
cheers

Try moving the conf file out of the way (eg mv /etc/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf.bak) ? this is what the Provisioning error suggests...

hi mycae,
I restored my linux partition back to b4 i tried to fix this fault,
and moved the sma.conf file as you suggetsed.
installed an upgrade to allow a new smb.conf file to be written,
this is the new file in it entirity

# Global parameters
[global]
 server role = domain controller
 workgroup = WORKGROUP
 realm =
 netbios name = ACER-UBUNTU

[netlogon]
 path = /var/lib/samba/sysvol/scripts
 read only = No

[sysvol]
 path = /var/lib/samba/sysvol
 read only = No

And i still got the realm not specified error

so i set realm to computername.WORKGROUP

then run
sudo /usr/share/samba/setup/provision --interactive

rebooting inbetween each step.
I can now upgrade (install packages) without errors, however, browse network is intermittent (majority of the time i can't see the computers on my network), however my win 7 laptop can see and access the shared files on this computer (Ubuntu)
Very frustrated as I only have a basic understanding of how the file sharing works in linux,

present state I have removed all samba4 using the package manager and then run
sudo apt-get purge samba4

my win 7 laptop can still access my folders on this computer
this computer cannot see any of the others and when i open windows network under browse network, i get
Failed to retrieve share list from server, which i expected without samba4

any other suggestions would be great.
If i am unable to get it going by tomorrow i'm going to do a fresh install.

From what i've been reading online, i suspect after re-installing all the updates and samba4 etc to enable file sharing that i may end up in the same boat. Hope not as i did enjoy using ubuntu for a while before it all went pear shaped.
will post outcome, repair or reinstall

just installed samba4, sure enough got the realm not specified error,
so i added the realm line,

tried another download and now i get the

along with a whole bunch of unknown parameters pertaining to my shares

however the upside i can access my win 7 laptop from my ubuntu machine
and i can access this machine from win 7 when i enter the network address \\acer-ubuntu

as far as nautilus is concerned none of my folders are shared, which i expected as they're shared directly from the smb.conf file

So I'm a bit stumped as to why an upgarde from samba 3 to samba 4 doesn't take into account all the parameters already being used in the smb.conf file??? not good sense to me.

I have had enough of trying to fix this, so I'm going to wipe my partition, do a fresh install, run updates, and use nautilus to share folders so that samba4 can be installed with no changes to the originally installed smb.conf file.
As one would expect of a new os.
I'll post the outcome.

Thanks for your help guys
