Problems w/10.04 after installing medibuntu

Asked by 2canchu

I tried installing medibuntu on 10.04 and now I can't update or install anything. Heres the message I get:E: Type '<html>' is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

Could someone help me get rid of this?

Try completely removing the Medibuntu repository, then re-adding it. If that doesn't work and you get the same error, please post again and include the full text of the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list.

That's what I'm trying to find out, how do I remove medibuntu?

Open the Update Manager, click Settings... on the lower-left corner of the screen, click the Other Software tab, find all the entries for Medibuntu (there are probably two of them), and remove them. Then click Close.

If only it were that easy. The Update Manager will not open I get a
red circle with a white horizontal line. My only option is "close",
that's it. The only other option is the teminal.

Open the Terminal and run this command:

sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu*

I highly recommend that you copy and paste commands into the Terminal, rather than manually typing them in, as pasting is not just easier and faster--it also reduces the risk of entering commands incorrectly (which could sometimes be quite bad).

You may be prompted for your password during this and maybe even subsequent commands. While entering it, you won't see any placeholder characters, like *. That's OK--just type it in, and press enter.

Then run this command:

cat /etc/apt/sources.list; ls -l /etc/apt/sources.list.d

Then perform the procedure at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PackageManagerTroubleshootingProcedure, but don't start a new question for posting the results.

That might just fix your problem. If it does, and the Update Manager is fully functional again, great! If it doesn't, then please report the results here (rather than in a new question). Please make sure to include all the text from the Terminal (Edit > Select All; Edit > Copy; and then paste it into your post).

Eliah, This worked. I can't thank you enough. I was close to wiping my drive and starting again. Also thanks for sticking with me with your help.
