Why has Adobe Reader been removed from the repositories?

Asked by Christopher

The Adobe Reader is superior to Evince in printing PDFs, music scores in particular. I do a good deal of such printing and using Evince is a waste of good paper. I would appreciate either suppling Evince with a similar set of preferences and printing capabilities as the Adobe platform, or make the Adobe product available again.

I prefer not to install it directly from Adobe, but will if needed.

Adobe Reader or (acroread) is in the Partner repository in 10.04LTS.

To enable the Partner repo:

System / Administration / Software Sources -- Other Software tab -- check "http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu lucid partner"

Then update your apt database, press the Reload button after making above change or "sudo apt-get update"

Then you can install acroread with "sudo apt-get install acroread" or by using Synaptic or Ubuntu Software Center.

Good luck,
George

I neglected to mention that it was removed from my Maverick test partition by this morning's updates. Now, when I use apt to try and re-install, I get the following message:

Package acroread is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package acroread has no installation candidate

andy@D420:~$ apt-cache policy acroread
acroread:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 9.3.3-1lucid1
  Version table:
     9.3.3-1lucid1 0
        500 http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ lucid/partner Packages

It's not in the repo for maverick according to ubottu in #ubuntu. Remember maverick is still in Alpha so you WILL get issues. If you head over to http://www.adobe.com you can download the deb from there instead.

Yeah, I did that early this afternoon. Evince does a poor job of printing sheet music; something I do at least weekly.

Can you help with this problem?
