Can't install synaptic. Going round in circles!

Asked by Roger King

Package manager (apt) reported dependency errors and said use synaptic.

Lucid said synaptic was not loaded, so I tried to install it. Here is the result. I can't install synaptic because I don't have the correct files needed to install synaptic!

This is the installation history:-

roger@Old-Tower:~$ gksudo synaptic
roger@Old-Tower:~$ synaptic
The program 'synaptic' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:

You typed what it told you to say wrong.

Do: sudo apt-get -f install

NOT sudo apt-get install -f !

Try it.

have you set your software sources ?

You strictly need to open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

But to fully check and upgrade your system using terminal using command line,
open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal

Tip: right click with mouse on the terminal title caption and select the item "Always on Top" doing this you will force the terminal window to stay on top of the other windows and you will find very easy to copy single row from this web page into the terminal...
Something more about using the terminal https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal

Then type or better copy and paste a row a time then press enter:
(Tip: select the single row to copy then right click into the terminal and to quick paste click with middle button of mouse )

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get update

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps

Thanks Michaelh, Yes I noticed the error and ran the correct instruction after I wrote the question. It made absolutely NO difference.

Thanks Greg. I have no idea what setting my software sources means, so no I haven't.

Thanks Marco, a very helpful reply. I have followed your instructions and I hope that the problem is cured. I am concerned at the large amount of files, etc. that were autoremoved.
Regarding your tip about Stay On Top. When I right click I get a drop down menu, but this option is not present. I am using Konsule. Is this normal?

Regards Roger
