I'm experiencing the same problem on a Dell Laptop.

From the update-apt-xapian-index manpage:
> -u, --update
> incremental update, reindexing only those packages whose version has changed since the last run

Sounds reasonable, but is not used in /etc/cron.weekly/apt-xapian-index.

The attached patch adds this option.
