Report system problem window requests password

Asked by richard

I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

A window popped up asking me to report a system problem.

Obligingly I clicked on a button "Report problem".

The next window asked me to enter my password, which, foolishly, I did.

For all I know I have inadvertently installed a keyboard logger or some other malware.

How can I know whether a password request is bona fide?

Should I wipe my disk and reinstall everything?

What you desribe sounds like a normal apport start.

apport is the system bug reporting tool/deamon and needs for reporting errors/crashes of the system internals(root programs), which it detects automatically, the root password to report it.

I will hope/trust that this is the normal behaviour of 'apport', but it seems to me that there is a security loophole here.
